The Compendium of Materia Medica is a classical medical work of great significance and on-going influence. During the 400 years since its first publication, it has made a great contribution not only to the development of TCM but the improvement of health care generally. Based on the contents of the Compendium of Materia Medica, the Coloured Atlas contains 1242 drugs and 2669 colour photographs. These photographs include the original animal, plant or mineral of the drugs and the drug themselves, including herbal pieces. Captions to each photograph is not only given in Chinese, but most of the drugs are also identified with their English and Japanese names, and the original plants and animals are labelled in Latin. Indexes to Chinese, English and Japanese names of the drugs, or the Latin name of the original plant or animal, are included.
